Below is a brief history of the lodge which sought to bring a second lodge to Haverhill in 1865… Saggahew Lodge.

Over 200 years ago, Freemasonry was brought to Haverhill; a budding community in the new Republic that would see a tremendous share of both history and industry.

The men who started Merrimack Lodge were members of Lodges in surrounding towns such as Newburyport but with the burden of travel in 1801 and the growing population of Haverhill, it was requested that the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts issue a charter to form a Lodge in the Town of Haverhill.

Since that time, Merrimack Lodge has assisted other Lodges in gaining their own respective charters as population in Northeastern Massachusetts grew.  One of such Lodges is Saggahew Lodge, founded predominately by members of Merrimack Lodge in 1865.
